Intervals and Transposition

What is tested

Identify and write intervals including compound ones, invert them, and transpose for instruments that do not sound at written pitch. Interval inversion recurs constantly in the analysis questions, so it pays to make it automatic.

Common mistakes

Compound intervals get reduced to simple ones and then labeled without the octave. A tenth is a tenth on this exam, not a third, and the same applies to elevenths and thirteenths in the analysis questions.
