Harmonic Rhythm - How Fast the Chords Change

The same progression sounds like a different piece depending on how many beats each chord lasts. The rate at which chords change is called harmonic rhythm, and it ties directly into meter and into how cadences are prepared.

So far the subject has been which chords to use and in what order. This lesson adds time.
The same C – F – G – C is not the same music if each chord lasts four beats rather than one. The interval at which the harmony changes is called harmonic rhythm.
Harmonic rhythm is a separate layer from tempo
Three things are easily confused, so it is worth separating them first.

All three move independently. A fast tempo can carry slow harmonic rhythm (busy figuration over broad, sustained chords) and the reverse happens too.
Fast music does not imply fast chord changes. Learning to hear these apart is the goal of this lesson.
One progression, two harmonic rhythms
Check: Both are the same four chords, C – F – G – C, at the same tempo of 96 BPM. Only the number of beats per chord differs. The first is broad and unhurried; the second is agitated. No chord was changed — only the time each one occupies.

Chord changes go on strong beats
There is one basic convention: the harmony changes on strong beats.
Unit 0 established that 4/4 carries a hierarchy of strong, weak, medium, weak. Aligning chord changes with that hierarchy makes meter and harmony point the same way, and the result is stable.
Changing on a weak beat and holding across the following strong beat works against the meter instead. That is used deliberately as syncopation, and it is standard practice in popular music. In classical harmony exercises, though, the plain version comes first.

Harmonic rhythm accelerates into a cadence
There is a design that classical repertoire uses constantly: chords change faster the closer the phrase gets to its ending.
Across an eight-measure phrase, that typically means:
- the first half moves at one chord per measure
- as the cadence nears, two chords per measure
- immediately before the cadence, one chord per beat
- and then the final tonic is held long
The effect is a contrast between accelerating and then stopping abruptly, which strengthens the sense of arrival. Harmonic rhythm creates the tension and the cadence resolves it — a division of labor between the two.
With and without acceleration
Check: Both pass through the same chords. The first gives every chord equal length. The second holds C long, gives F half as much, cuts G shorter still, and lands on C. The second is audibly heading somewhere. It is a demonstration that a sense of ending can be manufactured purely by distributing time, without changing a single chord.

What counts as normal varies by style
The default harmonic rhythm shifts with period and genre.

Pop harmonic rhythm is slow to leave room for the vocal line. Frequent chord changes mean the set of available melody notes keeps shifting, which makes a lyric hard to place.
Baroque instrumental writing takes the opposite approach: the rapid succession of chords is itself the source of momentum. Neither is better; the choice follows from what is meant to be in the foreground.

A counting trap — a moving bass does not mean a chord change
This is where listeners most often go wrong when trying to hear harmonic rhythm.
The bass moving does not mean the harmony has changed.If the bass alternates C – G – C – G while the chord above stays C, no chord change has occurred. That is one chord being played in an arpeggiated pattern, and it is completely routine in guitar and piano accompaniment.
The same thing happens with inversions. As Unit 3 showed, C, C/E, and C/G are all the C chord. The bass walks C – E – G by step, but the harmonic rhythm counts one chord continuing.
A moving bass over unchanging harmony
Check: In the first, the bass alternates between C and G while the sounding harmony stays C throughout. In the second, the harmony genuinely alternates between C and G. The first should feel like staying in one place; the second like moving. Amount of motion and speed of harmonic change are different things.

The test when listening is whether the upper voices changed. If only the bass moves and everything above holds, the chord is continuing.
A procedure for deciding it yourself
When writing, this order keeps you out of trouble.
- fix the meter and tempo
- fix the phrase length (four measures or eight)
- fix the harmonic rhythm (how many chords per measure)
- fit a sequence of functions (T→SD→D→T) into that frame
- choose the actual chords last
Reversing the order — lining up chords and then working out their lengths — tends to produce progressions that fight the meter. Build the container first and fill it afterward.
