Clefs, Staff and Ledger Lines
What is tested
At this level all four clefs are expected. You may be asked to rewrite a passage at the same pitch in a different clef, and to read comfortably on ledger lines above and below the staff. The alto and tenor clefs are the ones candidates usually neglect.
Common mistakes
When rewriting a passage into the alto or tenor clef, the key signature is often copied in its treble-clef shape. The accidentals sit on different lines and spaces in the C clefs and have to be redrawn from scratch, which is a mark lost before a single note is written.
