The seven modes arise from starting the white-key collection on different notes. Each one's character comes down to a difference of one or two notes against the major or minor scale, and the note that makes the difference is its characteristic tone. Everything here is compared over a single shared tonic.

In this lesson
The previous lesson established that A minor uses the same notes as C major with a different tonic. Extend that idea to every degree and you get seven scales. These are the church modes.
Where you start the white keys
Hold the seven white keys fixed and move only the starting note.

Ionian is the major scale and Aeolian is natural minor. Which means that what we call “major” and “minor” are just two of the seven modes, promoted to special status by history rather than by structure.
The names need a caveat
The account just given — rotate a major scale to a new starting note — is the modern conception of mode, which spread through jazz theory in the twentieth century. The medieval church modes were a different system altogether, involving finals, ranges, and psalm-tone formulas, and counted as eight rather than seven because authentic and plagal forms were paired. The names Dorian and Phrygian were in turn borrowed from ancient Greek theory, where the same names denote different arrangements of notes.
This curriculum uses the modern sense throughout. Knowing that “church modes” survives as a conventional label rather than a historically precise one will save confusion the first time you read about medieval repertoire.
The historical order also runs the opposite way from the presentation here. Medieval and Renaissance music was written modally; Ionian and Aeolian gradually became dominant and developed into the major/minor system of functional harmony. The other five fell out of the mainstream and returned in the twentieth century by way of folk music, jazz, and rock.
Same white keys, seven different scales
Check: Every one of these uses only white keys. Nothing changes but the starting note, and yet brightness and tension shift completely. Phrygian (from E) and Locrian (from B) make the unsettledness easiest to hear.

Characteristic tones — one note against the major scale
“Start the white keys somewhere else” is easy to remember and useless in practice. What you actually need is to produce D Dorian from D when someone calls for it, without mentally routing through C.
So the working method is to line everything up over the same tonic and describe each mode by its difference from major or minor. The note that makes the difference is the characteristic tone.

Using the table looks like this. Need C Lydian? Take C major (C D E F G A B) and raise only the fourth to get C D E F♯ G A B. Need C Dorian? Take C minor (C D E♭ F G A♭ B♭) and raise only the sixth to get C D E♭ F G A B♭.
One tonic, one note of difference
Check: All of these are built on C. Listen specifically for which single note has moved relative to the major scale. Lydian's raised fourth makes it hover; Mixolydian's lowered seventh makes it refuse to close.

One note is enough to change everything
It is genuinely surprising that a mode’s character rests on a single note. Six of seven notes can agree and the result still belongs to a different world.
The clearest demonstration is Lydian against Mixolydian. Both are major-type and both are bright, and yet:
- Lydian (♯4) → a brightness that lifts and hangs in the air
- Mixolydian (♭7) → a brightness that stays on the ground, open and unhurried
That entire difference comes from one note each, at the fourth and seventh degrees.
The reason a single note carries so much is that the characteristic tone changes an interval measured from the tonic. A ♯4 puts a tritone against the tonic; a ♭7 puts a minor 7th there. The interval characters from Unit 1 are showing up directly as scale characters.
Why Locrian is the one nobody uses
Locrian is conspicuously rare among the seven, and the reason is that its tonic triad is diminished.
In B Locrian the triad on B is B–D–F, and B–F is a diminished 5th. As the previous unit established, that interval is dissonant and wants to contract inward. When the tonic chord itself is unstable, it cannot serve as a place to come home to.
A scale with no stable resting point cannot supply the skeleton of a key. Read in reverse, that fact explains why the other six modes do work: a tonal center requires a consonant triad — major or minor — standing on the tonic.
