Chord Symbols and Roman Numerals

Chord symbols record absolute pitches; Roman numerals record roles inside a key. Neither is superior - they store different information. Being able to move between them is what makes popular and classical theory a single continuous subject rather than two.

One of the first things that trips people up in music theory is that two notations coexist. A band chart says “C Am F G”; a harmony textbook says “I vi IV V”. They are obviously describing the same thing, and the correspondence is not obvious at all.

This lesson builds that bridge. The conclusion is simple: the two record different information.

The decisive difference is the key.

The symbol “C” is self-contained. Whatever key a piece is in, “C” means play C–E–G. You do not need to know the key to perform it.

The numeral “I” plays nothing on its own. Only once a key is established does it resolve to actual pitches — C in C major, D in D major.

Which is to say:

  • chord symbols are a notation for performing (absolute, self-contained)
  • Roman numerals are a notation for analyzing (relative, key-dependent)

The clearest way to feel this is to watch a single D chord behave completely differently depending on context.

One chord, three roles

Check: All three contain the same D major triad. In the first it is the tonic of D major and the music ends on it. In the second it is the dominant of G major and pulls toward G. In the third it is an altered chord in C major, a secondary dominant aiming at G. The chord never changes; the context changes what it means.

That is why Roman numerals earn their keep. Knowing only that “a D chord appeared” tells you nothing about whether it is stable or tense. A numeral records exactly that.

The conversion procedure

Turning chord symbols into Roman numerals takes three steps.

  1. Fix the key (nothing can start without this)
  2. Count which degree each root sits on, using letter distance
  3. Choose case and symbols from the chord quality

Take “C Am Dm G7” in C major.

The result is I – vi – ii – V7. Now the structure is legible: it begins at home, passes through the submediant into subdominant territory, builds tension on the dominant seventh, and returns.

Popular-music theory writing uses a different convention for degree notation: numerals stay upper case and the quality is spelled out with the same suffixes chord symbols use.

The only real difference is how quality gets communicated.

  • classical style uses case (ii means minor)
  • popular style keeps everything upper case and adds a suffix (IIm means minor)

Popular style has the advantage that the correspondence with chord symbols is visible: Dm maps to IIm with the suffix carried straight across, which makes it cheap to learn for anyone already fluent in chord charts. The Nashville Number System takes the same idea further by replacing the numerals with Arabic numbers (1, 6m, 4, 5), optimized for writing and transposing charts at speed in a session.

Classical style has the advantage of needing fewer symbols: writing ii conveys “minor” without an m. When you are annotating a whole score by hand, that economy adds up.

This site’s tools — the diatonic reference, the progression analyzer, and others — use popular style. This curriculum uses classical style when discussing harmony and popular style when lining up with the tools. Being able to read both is the practical goal.

Which one to use depends on the job

  • comparing pieces that are in different keys
  • transposing (the sequence of roles is what must be preserved)
  • talking about harmonic function, which is the subject of the next unit

Consider the progression known in Japanese pop as the Royal Road progression (王道進行), IV–V–IIIm–VIm. It can only be given a name at all because Roman numerals let it refer to every key at once. Called “F–G–Em–Am” it would be a fact about C major and nothing more.

Roman numerals are what make a progression nameable, and therefore discussable. The next unit uses that notation to take up function — why one chord wants to move to another in the first place.
